What Are Binaural Beats?

An Emerging Form of Sound Wave Technology
Binaural means “both ears,” and binaural beats are created by presenting slightly different frequencies to each ear. What results is a pulse in the brain that is the difference between the two frequencies... the perception of a third tone. This third tone is called a binaural beat.
Binaural beats are said to provide many of the same benefits as meditation: lower stress, increase focus, aid with sleep and relaxation, boost mood, assist with pain management, and foster creativity.
To listen to binaural beats, a person will need a pair of stereo headphones and an MP3 player or another music system.
The Science

Sound Waves Creating Brainwave Shifts
Binaural beats are an auditory illusion that occur when you detune a tone and send the two tones of slightly different frequency to each ear separately.
This difference in frequencies creates the illusion of the third sound—a beating rhythm. The brain has been shown to resonate at the same frequency as the binaural beats rhythm. For example, a tone that is de-tuned by 6 Hz for example, will create a resonance in your brain of 6 Hz. We measure 6 Hz to correlate with meditative, calm emotional/cognitive states. Currently, research shows that these states are able to be consistently produced in clinical settings.
How Sound Medicine is Different
Brainwave Bands & Blended States

Rather than relying on a single target frequency, Sound Medicine® uses proprietary blended binaural beats that combine carefully selected frequencies within and across brainwave bands. Modern neuroscience demonstrates that while one or more brainwave bands may become dominant during particular states of consciousness, multiple neural oscillations remain active and work together dynamically.
Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology reflects this natural complexity by integrating carefully selected frequencies and multiple evidence-informed auditory techniques into each musical composition.
These proprietary blended formulas were evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study, with findings published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience
Brainwave Bands & Blended States
DELTA
Primary Brainwave Band: Delta (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support sleep using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
THETA
Primary Brainwave Band: Theta (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support deeply relaxed, inward focused states using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
ALPHA
Primary Brainwave Band: Alpha (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support very relaxed, passive attention using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
BETA
Primary Brainwave Band: Beta (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support active external attention and relaxed focus using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
GAMMA
Primary Brainwave Band: Gamma (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support concentration using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
Mixed Brainwave States
THETA + DELTA
Primary Brainwave Bands: Theta–Delta (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support deep relaxation into sleep (gentle rest into deep sleep) using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
ALPHA + THETA
Primary Brainwave Bands: Alpha–Theta (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support relaxed passive attention with inward focus (early stages of creativity) using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.
ALPHA + BETA
Primary Brainwave Bands: Alpha–Beta (with complementary supporting frequencies)
Designed to support relaxed focus with somewhat inward attention (good flow for studying) using Sound Medicine's proprietary blending methodology.

Each Sound Medicine® formula is individually composed using Dr. Elizabeth Krasnoff's proprietary blending methodology. The formulas integrate carefully selected frequencies within these brainwave bands together with multiple evidence-informed auditory techniques to support specific states of consciousness while preserving musicality and acoustic comfort.
These proprietary blended formulas were evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study, with findings published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
While the study did not compare blended formulas with single-frequency binaural beats, it demonstrated measurable physiological effects, supporting the effectiveness of this blended approach and encouraging further research into innovative methods of auditory neuromodulation.
Research has shown that in addition to effecting our states of consciousness, binaural beats have the important effect of synchronizing our brain hemispheres. Existing modalities such as EMDR and Neurologic Music Therapy have demonstrated the therapeutic benefits of brain synchronization.
Elizabeth's doctoral dissertation reviews the transformative effects of sound, specifically "The Effects of Auditory Binaural Beats on Consciousness and the Human Nervous System."
She designed a double blind, controlled study and tested her binaural beats formulas in Psytek Labs on the campus of the California Institute for Human Science. Watch a video of the Binaural Beats Pilot Study experiment here.
Her positive test results, published in the peer-reviewed journal “Frontiers in Human Neuroscience,” allow her formulas to be considered qualified as evidence-based formulas.
